How to Make Wall Designs With Painter's Tape

If you have a large, plain wall, you may be seeking simple ways to spice it up. Hanging pictures is nice, but expected. If you are the type of person who likes to try something different, painting an interesting design over the whole wall may be an ideal project for you. It allows for complete creative flexibility, and the finished product makes a bold statement. If you are unused to painting or using painter’s tape, practice on wood scraps before moving to your wall. If you are still nervous, simple stripes are an unintimidating design that anyone can pull off.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the dimensions of your design on the wall. Use a straight edge and a pencil to sketch the outline of your design.

    • 2

Cover each pencil line carefully with a strip of painter’s tape. Cut the tape strips to the proper length and trim the width if necessary to create the size you need. Press the end of each piece in place and slowly lay the tape down the length of the pencil line with one hand as you smooth the tape surface with the other.

    • 3

Paint the wall around the tape; you can paint the space within the tape, the space around the tape or both to create the design that you desire. Apply paint over the tape edges first and then work outward. Let the paint dry completely and peel away the painter’s tape at a 45-degree angle.
