How to Use Gas Lanterns

Gas lanterns run off of natural gas, propane gas or a mixture of propane and butane. They contain a wick, which is lit and stays on until the gas runs out, or until you turn the lantern off. Gas lanterns are commonly used outdoors in landscaping and when camping. Some older homes may also have interior gas lanterns. Using a gas lantern is a straightforward process, but you must follow proper safety precautions since they can start fires.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the gas lantern in an area that does not contain any combustible items. Clear away all leaves, pine straw, clothing or fabric which may ignite. Do not place the lantern near tents or under low-hanging trees.

    • 2

Insert a new canister of propane or other gas into the gas lantern if it is a hand-held model. Use the instructions provided with the lantern for proper installation. The canisters typically snap into place on the bottom of the lanterns. If the gas lantern is permanently installed, skip this step.

    • 3

Locate the small gas regulator knob located on the side of the gas lantern base or sometimes just under the globe. Turn the knob counterclockwise to open the flow of gas. Turn it only 1/4 to 1/2 of a turn, but do not open it all the way.

    • 4

Remove the gas globe and set it aside in a safe location. Strike a long-stemmed match and hold it in the center of the gas lantern until the flame ignites. Replace the globe.

    • 5

Adjust the gas regulator knob to raise or lower the height of the flame as needed.

    • 6

Turn the gas lantern off when you are done using it by simply turning the gas regulator knob clockwise until the flame goes out.
