How to Add Space to a Ranch House

Many people prefer the convenience of a ranch style home, with its clean lines and single-story living space. The problem is that the single-story design can limit the amount of storage space you have available. You can add space by making the most of the storage you have, and by adding storage features to every room in the home.

Instructions

    • 1

Go through your ranch home one room at a time and identify items you no longer use. Set these items aside and hold a garage sale, or simply give those items to charity. You can make some extra money or raise money for a good cause and create some extra storage space at the same time.

    • 2

Invest in a storage shed for the yard and use it to store your out-of-season clothes, holiday decorations and other items you do not need all the time. Label each of the storage totes with its contents to make things easier to find when you need them.

    • 3

Purchase and install a closet organizer for each closet. Use that closet organizing system to maximize your storage space and help you keep your clothes and shoes neat and easy to find.

    • 4

Install a hanger bar or coat hook under the staircase in the basement of your ranch home. The space under the stairs is often wasted, and you can take back that space by using it to hang coats during the warm months.

    • 5

Keep storage boxes under the stairs as well. Label each box with its contents, then stack the boxes as high as you safely can. Keep boxes with heavier items at or near the bottom.

Build bookcases and storage units along the walls of your home, and under the basement staircase if you wish. You can also purchase ready-made storage units and shelving to keep your home organized and make the most of your space.
