How to Make Shelving for Spices

Novice woodworkers can tackle a spice rack project using a simple but functional design and common household tools. Spice racks free up valuable counter and cabinet space, making them particularly useful in small kitchens. Additionally, by making your own spice rack, you can stain it to match your kitchen's decor. Mount your spice rack near your stove so you can easily access your spices and seasonings while you're cooking your favorite recipes.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut two lengths of 1-by-3 inch plywood to 18 inches long. Cut four lengths of 1-by-3 inch plywood to 24 inches long. The 18-inch boards become the side panels and the remaining boards make up the shelves and top and bottom panels.

    • 2

Sand all of the boards with fine-grade sandpaper until smooth. Clean up the dust by wiping all of the wood with a tack cloth.

    • 3

Put the boards together in the final shape of the spice rack. Lay the two side boards lengthwise and upright, then place the top and bottom boards in their respective positions. Place the shelves at the desired locations on the rack -- typically, one board should be at the 6-inch mark and the other should be at the 12-inch mark.

    • 4

Place the spice rack against a solid surface so you can drill without the pieces moving. Drill two wood trim screws to connect each 24-inch board to the two side boards.

    • 5

Fill in the screw holes with wood putty. Scrape the holes with a putty knife to make the putty as flush as you can. Once the putty dries, lightly sand it to make it perfectly flush against the wood.

    • 6

Paint a wood stain onto the spice rack with a foam brush. If desired, add more coats of stain, but allow the stain to dry between each application.

    • 7

Drill four keyholes into the backs of two side panels with a router fitted with a keyhole bit. Drill two keyholes 3 inches from the bottom of the spice rack and two more 3 inches from the top. The wide end of the keyhole should be pointing down.

Fit the keyhole slot covers into the holes. The slot covers come with screws, which you drill into the wall so you can mount your spice rack.
