How to Decorate Tall Ceilings With Paintings

Tall ceilings can offer a decorating challenge because there is so much space to fill. One of the ways you can take advantage of tall way space is by creating a visually appealing art display featuring some of your favorite paintings. By varying the sizes of the paintings and arranging them in an aesthetically pleasing fashion, you can turn the tall, plain walls in your home into your personal art gallery.

Instructions

    • 1

Plan the arrangement of your art work. Decide whether you want to group paintings by subject matter, artist or size. Look at the paintings you have and sketch the arrangement of your paintings on paper before you go to the trouble of climbing a ladder to hang them. This saves you the time of having to take paintings down and start from scratch.

    • 2

Hang paintings in an asymmetrical pattern. Avoid putting large similarly shaped paintings next to one another. Avoid mixing very small with very large paintings. This can upset the balance of the wall. Paintings that share a wall should be offset rather than lined up neatly and should be approximately the same size.

    • 3

Arrange paintings with similar color schemes. This doesn't mean you can't mix bright paintings with dark paintings, but if the colors of two or three paintings are so drastically different than the others, you risk drawing attention away from the overall display.

Arrange by similar subjects. This doesn't mean all landscapes need to be together or all of your paintings that contain water should be on the same wall. Arrange paintings by subject matter in a complementary fashion. A painting of a unicorn and a painting of a lighthouse might be good on the same wall, but a unicorn and an old fashioned firehouse might not be as complementary. This is subjective on an individual basis, so let your eye guide you.
