How to Decorate a Carpeted Floor

If you have a carpeted room, you also have a number of decorating options. Whether the carpet you are working with is top of the line or bottom of the barrel, you can use your decorating skills to make the room look great. Understanding how to incorporate that carpet into the overall room design allows you to choose the right accessories and decorate the room with style.
  1. Provide a Contrast

    • Creating a contrast can make the room look more interesting and give you more decorating options than you would have otherwise. Paint the surrounding walls a contrasting color to create drama in the room and make the carpet itself look more appealing. For instance, if you are decorating a room with beige carpet, paint the walls a darker brown to show off the carpet and accentuate the floor. If the room has a dark colored carpet, use light paint on the walls to brighten up the space and make it look larger.

    Throw Rugs

    • If the carpet in your room is high quality and attractive, keep your use of throw rugs to a minimum. But if the carpet is an unattractive color, or if it has seen its better days, you can make the room look a lot better by using throw rugs creatively and liberally. Start by placing a large rectangular throw rug in front of the sofa. This helps protect a heavily trafficked area while adding contrast to the room. Use an arrangement of throw rugs in various shapes and colors to accent the carpeted room and make it look more interesting.

    Furniture Decor

    • Chances are you will not have an opportunity to buy all new furniture for your carpeted room, but you can work with what you have to create a stylish and inviting space. Start by using an assortment of throw cushions on the couch. Choose throw pillows in colors and patterns that complement the ones you chose for your throw rugs and other flooring accents. Use an assortment of colorful throws on the couch and chair as well, and change the look often to keep things looking new.

    Accent the Room

    • The right accents and accessories can make a big difference in the way your carpeted room looks. Take a minute to look at the existing accessories and how they work, or do not work, with the room, then go shopping for new lamps, mirrors and other accents. If you have a light colored, neutral carpet and dark walls, placing bright chrome mirrors and floor lamps adds beauty and drama to the room. If your carpet is dark and the walls are light, choosing an assortment of black picture frames in onyx and wood can make the entire room look brighter.
