Purchase an embroidery hoop that’s slightly larger than the width of your sink drain.
Open the embroidery hoop and place the separate pieces on a work surface. Paint a layer of clear waterproof sealant to the entire surface of both sections of the hoop. Allow it to dry overnight.
Place a section of stainless steel mesh on top of the inner hoop that's several inches bigger than the circumference. Use a stainless steel mesh that has a wire diameter of .009 inches so it is easy to bend and cut. Push the outer hoop on top of the inner hoop, but don't secure it.
Put the combination of the embroidery hoop and stainless steel mesh over the top of the drain so the mesh is on the bottom. Gently push down on the mesh section, molding it so it extends into the funnel-like bowl of the drain. Form the metal into the shape of the drain by bending and pushing as necessary.
Tighten the embroidery hoop once you form the shape. Remove the assembly from the drain and trim the excess mesh away from the outside of the embroidery hoop with scissors or tin snips.
Place the sieve over the drain to catch debris.
