How to Make a Canopy Out of Shelves

Add a touch of romantic whimsy to your bedroom and make the bed the focal point of the space with a canopy. Instead of using a traditional canopy that hangs from the ceiling above the bed, create a different look by hanging the canopy on the wall above the head of the bed. Wall shelves can be used as supports for the fabric of the canopy and double as a display shelf above the bed.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the wall behind your bed to determine the size of the shelf you need to purchase. For example, you can use a shelf that is narrower than the width of your bed, or you can use one that is the same size of the width of your bed. Purchase a shelf that is equal to the dimensions.

    • 2

Measure the height of the shelf. Determine where you want the shelf to sit on the wall and measure from that point to the ground. Subtract the height of the shelf from the measurement. For example, if the shelf is eight inches tall and you want it to sit 72 inches above the bed, you'll have a measurement of 64 inches.

    • 3

Purchase a length of fabric that is equal to the width of the shelf and the dimensions taken in Step 2.

    • 4

Place the top of the fabric against the bottom back of the shelf. Secure the fabric to the back of the shelf with a staple gun.

    • 5

Mark the width of the shelf on the wall where you want the canopy to hang. Remove the shelf and measure the distance from each of the edges to the brackets on the back of shelf. Using your pencil marks on the wall as a guide, use a measuring tape to mark the location of the brackets from either edge of the shelf on the wall.

    • 6

Drill pilot holes in the wall where each of the brackets will be placed. Insert toggle bolts or heavy-duty anchors into each of the pilot holes so that the tops are flush with the wall.

    • 7

Drill 2-inch screws into each of the anchors.

    • 8

Attach the brackets on the back of the shelf to the screws on the wall.

    • 9

Straighten the material suspended from the bottom of the shelf.
