How to Insulate a Wooden Garage Door

While your garage’s ceilings and walls might be insulated, don’t forget about your garage door. Your wooden garage door will already insulate your garage better than a metal door, but with some simple foam board, you can increase your garage’s warmth during the winter. This is especially useful if you use your garage as a work area or simply if you prefer your car to be a little warmer on those cold winter mornings.

Instructions

    • 1

      Close your garage door.

    • 2

Measure the length and width of one of your garage door panels from the inside using a measuring tape. For the length, measure from the interior of one metal lip to the other; for the width, measure from top to bottom and subtract 1 inch.

    • 3

Cut foam board panels matching the measurements you found in step 1 using a craft knife. Cut as many panels as you have wood panels in your garage door. You can also use foam sheathing for this purpose.

    • 4

Bend one foam panel slightly so that it slides underneath one metal lip and then the other.

    • 5

Secure it along the top and bottom edges using duct tape.

    • 6

Repeat steps 4 and 5 until the entire rear side of your wooden garage door is covered.
