Hanging a Balloon Shade

Add an eye-catching touch of whimsy to any room in your home by covering the windows with balloon shades. As the name suggests, these shades resemble balloons, or fluffy clouds, that hang at the bottom of the shade. While these treatments are certainly attractive, they are better suited for decoration than for functionality. With curtain hardware and a little patience, you can hang and display your balloon window treatments.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width of the window. Place the end of a measuring tape 1 inch from the outer edge of the top of the window frame and pull it across the frame 1 inch out from the opposite outer edge. This measurement determines the size of curtain rod you'll need to purchase.

    • 2

Measure the length of the window. Place the end of the measuring tape on the inner edge of the top of the window frame and pull it down to the inner edge of the bottom of the window frame. This measurement indicates the length of the shade you'll need to purchase.

    • 3

Place the curtain rod across the top of the window frame, using a level to ensure the rod is straight. Make a pencil mark on either side of the curtain rod to indicate where the rod should hang. Remove the rod.

    • 4

Drill the brackets that came with the curtain rod into place. Set the brackets over the pencil marks and drill the accompanying screws through the holes in the top and bottom of the bracket.

    • 5

Set the shade facedown on a flat surface. Locate the large and small rings sewn onto the back. The large rings are set near the bottom of the shade with a few small rings in a vertical line above them.

    • 6

Open the slit on one of the large rings and insert the first small ring above the large ring into it. Continue adding small rings into the large ring until you reach the desired height. Hold the shade up to determine how high you want the curtain to sit.

    • 7

Repeat step 2 with the rest of the rings along the back of the curtain. Add the same number of rings into each large ring.

    • 8

Thread the slit at the top of the curtain onto a curtain rod. Set the curtain rod on the curtain hardware so the rings on the back of the shade face the window.

    • 9

Spread out the shade on the curtain rod and make any adjustments necessary.
