How to Fix a Noisy La-Z-Boy Recliner

The first La-Z-Boy recliners were introduced in 1928, and they have been a staple in homes ever since. La-Z-Boy recliners can develop a squeak or creak after frequent use of the recliner mechanism. If your recliner now makes noise when you recline it, it is not a sign that the chair needs to be replaced; it means the recliner mechanism needs some attention. Address the issue, and your La-Z-Boy can continue to help you relax after a hard day's work for years to come.

Instructions

    • 1

Sit in the chair and recline it to its furthest position. Carefully climb out of the chair while it is still in the reclining position.

    • 2

Flip the chair so its bottom is facing up.

    • 3

Remove the cover from the bottom of the chair. Some chairs' bottom covers zip or have snaps, but, if this is not the case, carefully remove the cover by prying the staples or nails away from the frame with a flat-head screwdriver. This enables you to access the recliner mechanism.

    • 4

Check for loose nuts or bolts on the reclining mechanism. Use pliers to tighten any loose nuts or bolts.

    • 5

Use metal lubricant to loosen any rust or dry parts of the reclining mechanism. Apply to the nuts, bolts, reclining arms, springs and coils.

    • 6

Replace the bottom cover and flip the recliner back into its normal position.

    • 7

Sit in the recliner and use the lever to close the recliner. Use the lever again to recline the chair. Listen for any squeaks or creaks. If the recliner is still noisy, repeat Steps 1 through 6.
