Create a rustic stainless steel backsplash. Attach fine-grit sandpaper to an electric sander and sand over the surface of the stainless steel in a circular motion, creating a swirled effect. Move the sander in one direction -- clockwise or counterclockwise -- over the entire sheet or switch back and forth between the two directions to vary the design. Install the sheets with decorative nail heads to add to the design of the backsplash.
Add interest to sheets of copper or aluminum with a blow torch. Purchase thin sheets of copper or aluminum and hold the flame of a blow torch over the surface of the material. The heat from the torch will create striking colors in the metal. Move the torch over the metal in a haphazard manner to create a random, yet eye-catching design. Another option is to use the torch to create specific designs. circles or boxes, for example.
