How to Decorate Around the Heating Vents

Heating vents are necessary parts of rooms, but they do little for the aesthetics of spaces. Conceal your heating vents by decorating around them. Decorative options can be simple or quite elaborate. The tactic you select depends on the type of heating vents that you have. It also depends on the look that you want to create.

Instructions

    • 1

Paint designs on the wall around the heating vent. Use paint that coordinates or contrasts with the wall color. Create decorative scrolls, shapes or simple lines on the wall around the vent.

    • 2

Frame the heating vents with molding. Decorative trim or baseboard molding are two molding options. Measure each of the sides of the heating vent with a measuring tape, and cut the molding to fit the dimensions with a miter saw. Set the molding around the vent, and secure it in place with finishing nails.

Conceal a heating vent with a window seat. Build a window seat out of plywood, lattice and 2-by-4s around a vent or radiator. Use the plywood to create the seat. Place the lattice over the front of the vent to allow the heat to escape. Set a decorative pillow or cushion on top of the seat to create a comfortable surface.

Place a decorative cover over the heating vent. Home improvement stores sell decorative vents that are intended to go directly over the vent, turning the unattractive feature into a more visually-pleasing element.
