How to Put Trim Around a Gas Fireplace

Installing trim around a gas fireplace is no different than installing it around any other kind of fireplace. Trim is often used to fill in gaps that form on the inside of the mantel or wall. Unlike baseboard trim, you’ll need to use an adhesive to keep fireplace trim in place. After taking a few measurements and then cutting the trim, you’ll be ready to install the pieces and enhance the look of your gas fireplace.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the fireplace. Make sure that it’s cool before you begin installing the trim.

    • 2

Place the right trim panel along the right side of the fireplace, against either the inside of the mantel or the wall. Hold the top trim panel along the top of the fireplace. Lift the right panel up so that the top of it overlaps the right edge of the top panel. Mark a diagonal line from the inner corner formed by the two pieces of trim to the outer corner. Do the same for the left panel of trim and the left edge of the top panel. These lines serve as the 45-degree cutting lines.

    • 3

Measure from the inside corner formed by the right panel and the top panel down to the bottom of the wall or mantel. Draw a horizontal line on the right panel indicating the bottom. Do the same for the left panel.

    • 4

Cut all three pieces of trim according to the measurements you marked. For the 45-degree cutting lines, use a miter saw. Use a table saw for the straight horizontal cuts at the bottom of both the right panel and left panel. Always wear safety glasses and gloves

Install the top piece of trim with adhesive. Add adhesive to the other panels. Align the left trim panel to meet the 45-degree corner of the top trim panel. Do the same for the right trim panel.
