How to Decorate With Pennants

Use pennants to decorate the home for sporting events, to support a cause or just to add some fun to a room. Pennants come in limitless styles and colors. You can collect them from tourist locations you have visited, sporting teams you support or designer pennants meant to add color and intrigue to a room. Pennants have been around since the 19th century, so you can even find antique pennants to showcase.

Instructions

    • 1

Hang a string of pennants across the ceiling, attaching them with tape or putty. Allow the pennants to drape in the center, but not so much that they interfere when people walk under them. String from one side to the other or string one side where the ceiling and wall meets and the other side on the wall across the room so it looks like an awning. Line several rows of pennants next to each other or crisscross them for varied looks.

    • 2

Attach strings of pennants to natural dividers in the room, such as a floating shelf, window frame, window ledge or hearth. Use tape or putty to attach the pennant string at each end with a slight drape in the center. This works better for medium to small sized pennants because large ones can interfere with the room's decor.

    • 3

Stake small individual pennants in floral arrangements or potted plants. These come attached to wood or wire stakes with small pennants on top. You can even stake them in food, but ensure the bottom part is clean by wrapping it in plastic wrap.

    • 4

Create a background for the pennants by stretching decorating fabric across a wood frame and stapling it in place in the back. Use fabric that coordinates with the pennants. Attach small pennants to the fabric by pinning, sewing or gluing them in place. If the pennants are in a string, you can zigzag them across the fabric or glue individual pennants in a pattern. Use one large pennant as a focal point, if desired.

Attach pennants to sticks by making holes at the base of the pennant and tying them to a stick with string or twine. Set the pennants in a vase or jar filled with rocks.
