How to Hang Christmas Lights on a Wood Table Without Using Tape

Hanging strings of colorful or monochrome Christmas lights is an excellent way to decorate for festive get-togethers. Using tape, however, on a wood table is risky, as the tape may mar the finish or leave hard-to-remove adhesive behind. Strength is also a factor; it is often difficult to find a tape that will stay where you put it after you add the weight of the lights. Fortunately, other options are available for hanging Christmas lights on a wood table.

Things You'll Need

  • Self-adhesive plastic hooks
  • Stocking hangers
  • Thumbtacks
  • Table cloth
  • Safety pins

Instructions

    • 1

Use plastic, reusable self-adhesive hooks that are suitable for the size lights you are hanging. For small LED types, mini hooks are sufficient. Heavier lights with larger bulbs may require a slightly larger size.

    • 2

Purchase heavy weighted figurines such as those used to hang Christmas stockings from a mantle. Place them along the edge of the table and drape the string of lights through the hooks that hang over the edge of the table.

    • 3

Attach lights with thumbtacks attached underneath and behind the lip of the table. Droop them low enough to be visible.

    • 4

Cover the wood table with a cloth, and use safety pins to attach the lights. This must be done all the way around to balance the cloth and keep it from sliding off with the weight of the lights. A heavy centerpiece may also be used to hold the cloth in place.
