How to Make Low Bowl Flower Arrangements

The vase you select for your flower arrangement is as important as the flowers placed in it. A vase should not be so ornamental as to overwhelm the flowers in the arrangement it holds, but instead enhance and complement. Flower arrangements created using low bowls look best when arranged a horizontal or vertical line design, mass design or a combination line/mass design.

Instructions

  1. Horizontal Arrangements

    • 1

Soak green floral foam in a large bowl filled with water. Place the foam on top of the water and allow the foam to naturally absorb it. This thoroughly and completely fills the foam with no air pockets.

    • 2

Use a sharp knife to cut and trim the foam to fit your low bowl. To allow room for water the foam should not fill the entire bowl, but should be about 1 inch higher than the rim of the bowl to allow more natural placement of the flowers.

    • 3

Secure the floral foam to the inside of the bowl using floral tape. Place two or more strips of tape over the foam, attaching the ends to the bottom of the bowl.

    • 4

Insert the stems of the flowers on the outer edge of your arrangement first. Push the stems deep into the foam. In horizontal floral designs, the long stems should project outward horizontally and should be positioned first. Closer to the inside of the bowl, insert shorter stemmed flowers and greenery so it projects out, over the bowl in a natural-looking manner.

    • 5

Add more flowers and greenery to your arrangement, working from the outside to the center, filling in the area over the low bowl to create a dome or low triangle shape with the flowers.

    Vertical Arrangements

    • 6

Prepare floral foam by pre-soaking in a container of water.

    • 7

Use a sharp knife to cut or trim the foam to fit in the low bowl. Cut the foam half an inch shorter than the rim of the bowl, unless you plan to have flowers hang over the bowl. In that type of floral design, the foam should be 1 inch higher than the rim so when you insert the stems the flower position appears natural.

    • 8

Attach the foam to the bowl using strips of floral tape that go over the foam, with the ends attached to the bottom of the bowl.

    • 9

Insert the stems of the flowers and greenery that you want on the outer edges of your arrangement. Working toward the center of the arrangement, continue inserting stems, finishing with the tallest, or longest, stems last. The overall shape of a vertical flower arrangement should be triangular.
