Flower Arrangement Container Ideas

The right container can be an essential component of a floral arrangement. Manufactured in a variety of shapes, sizes and designs, the container helps you create a bold and distinctive statement with any arrangement. From the simple glass vase to a more eclectic vintage piece, floral containers are an accessory for the simple everyday space.
  1. Think Outside the Vase

    • When you create a floral arrangement, use any type of vessel. If the container lacks a watertight seal, simply line the container with a plastic bag to prevent water leaks. Use floral foam to make the arrangement conform to the container. Know what you want and don't limit yourself to the traditional vase. Rummage through thrift stores and yard sales to find pieces to use as a container that other people might overlook. You can transform an everyday pitcher, for example, into a flower-holding container, and by using different types of containers, you can add one-of-a-kind pieces to your decor.

    Vintage Containers

    • Using antiques as floral containers adds to any decor. In addition, you often find these thrift store and yard sale pieces at low cost. Low, round, opaque containers are sometimes preferable as they hide the stems. Containers such as vintage stew pots and serving bowls give the entire floral arrangement a more polished look, and antique make-up and chocolate tins add a feminine, vintage touch to any space. For a more rustic feel, look for miner's cups, mason jars and old kettles. Vintage mugs, glasses, jars and cups spruce up small floral arrangements.

    Finding the Perfect Pot

    • Pots are the most widely used containers for floral arrangements. These containers are ideally suited for flower arrangements due to their versatility. They can be used indoors or outdoors, in cold or hot weather, contemporary or modern decor. You can find an array of pots, from terra-cotta to stone and synthetic pots, but terra-cotta is most often used for the typical floral arrangement since it offers a classic look. However, newer plastic pots have the look of terra-cotta at a fraction of the weight, a consideration with large, heavy arrangements that you wish to be easily portable. In addition, you can purchase a plastic pot much more cheaply than a terra-cotta, stone or metal pot. Stone and metal pots are extremely durable, but heavy, which makes them the pot to use for an arrangement that will remain in a stationary position as they can be difficult to move.

    Hand-Painted Containers

    • You can hand-paint floral arrangement containers. Hand-painted containers express your style and flare, adding a personalized touch to your decor. Glass, terra-cotta and plastic pots are ideal for hand-painted containers, and choose a paint that won't rub or wash off, such as acrylic or enamel paint. You can be as simple or add as much detail as you want. Wash the surface of the item before you begin to paint. Hand-painting your own containers tends to be a cheap, fast and easy process.
