How to Hide Heating Ducts in a Basement

Heating ducts in the basement are often left exposed, which can be an eyesore if you’re trying to give the space a more finished look. These ducts may run across the ceiling or extend along a wall depending on the layout of your basement. Hide the ducts using one of several possible methods. Avoid covering any vents because this would obstruct airflow.

Instructions

    • 1

Hide vents along a wall by creating a curtain wall. Nail a piece of wood to the two top corners of the wall along which the ducts extend. Use wood pieces that extend past the length of the heating ducts. Screw one eyehook into the end of each piece of wood and extend a wire between the two. Hang curtains or fabric from the wire, which conceal the heating ducts.

Hide a smaller heating duct against a wall by covering it with a decorative folding screen, like a room divider. Purchase one that’s tall enough to extend above the height of the duct and wide enough to span its length.

    • 3

Cover narrow heating ducts on the ceiling by enclosing them in a faux beam with a hollow center. Position the beam so it goes across the duct and nail it in place. Paint it to match the surroundings.

Create a fabric ceiling to hide basement heating ducts. Measure the ceiling to determine how much fabric you need. Double the width so the fabric accommodates the heating duct. Start in one corner of the ceiling and staple the fabric in place. Repeat the stapling process on the other three corners and then staple along the perimeter for added security.
