Draw attention to the angular features of the recessed ceiling with molding. Choose a darker molding to accentuate the depth of the tray ceiling or stick with white crown molding to add elegance and dimension.
Install a ceiling fan on the tray ceiling. The fan draws attention to the architectural detail by making the room seem taller. Choose a fan that fits with the room’s decor or take advantage of the room’s added height by installing a fan with a standard or extended mount, as opposed to a low-profile model that is flush with the ceiling.
Paint the tray ceiling a complementary color to the room. Draw attention to the tray ceiling by painting a different color than the surrounding ceiling or walls. Complementary colors, or hues found on the opposite sides of the color wheel, play off each other to make a space feel more dramatic.
Apply wallpaper to the recessed section of the ceiling. Choose a simple pattern, such as stripes or geometric shapes, to keep the space from feeling gaudy. If possible, choose a pattern that matches other elements of the room -- including bedding or draperies -- to tie the space together.
Install ceiling tiles on the recessed portion of the ceiling. Stick with monotone tiles to create a less dramatic transition, or choose brightly colored or patterned pieces to make the tray ceiling stand out.
Paint a mural on the tray ceiling. Give your room a Sistine Chapel look by creating a dramatic representation of a famous work of art, or allow your kids to paint the tray ceiling in their bedrooms to personalize the space. Hire a professional muralist if you don’t feel comfortable about your artistic abilities.
