Materials Needed:
1. Fabric of your choice (pre-washed and ironed)
2. Scissors
3. Measuring tape
4. Iron
Instructions:
Step 1: Prepare the Fabric
Cut your fabric into rectangular strips. The width of the strips will determine the width of your bias tape. For example, if you cut 2-inch wide strips, you'll end up with 1-inch wide bias tape.
Step 2: Cut the Strips on the Bias
To cut your strips on the bias, place your fabric flat on a table. Position your scissors at a 45-degree angle to the selvages (the finished edges) of the fabric. Cut the fabric into strips, making sure to keep the angle consistent.
Step 3: Iron the Strips
Press each strip of fabric in half lengthwise, wrong sides together. This will create a crease down the center of the strip.
Step 4: Unfold the Strips
Unfold the strips and press them again, this time wrong sides together and perpendicular to the previous fold. You'll now have a strip that is folded into quarters.
Step 5: Cut the Strips into Bias Tape
Using the crease you just made as a guide, cut the strip into thin strips. The width of these strips will depend on your desired bias tape size. For example, if you want 1/2-inch bias tape, cut the strips into 1-inch wide sections.
Step 6: Fold and Iron the Bias Tape
Open up each strip and fold both edges into the center crease. Then, fold the strip in half lengthwise, wrong sides together. Press each strip flat to create your bias tape.
Your homemade bias tape is now ready to use! You can use it for various sewing projects, such as binding seams, creating piping, or adding decorative trims to your garments.
