* 1 cup all-purpose flour
* 1/2 cup sugar
* 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
* 1/2 teaspoon salt
* 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, cold and cut into small pieces
* 1/4 cup ice water
* 1 egg yolk
* 1 tablespoon water
* Red food coloring
* Black food coloring
* Granulated sugar, for sprinkling
1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
3. Use your fingers to work the butter into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.
4. Add the ice water and egg yolk and mix until the dough just comes together.
5. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead it gently for a few minutes until it is smooth.
6. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
7. In a small bowl, whisk together the red and black food coloring and 1 tablespoon of water.
8. Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface to a 1/4-inch thickness.
9. Use a Halloween cookie cutter to cut out hand shapes.
10. Place the hand shapes on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet.
11. Brush the hands with the red and black food coloring mixture.
12. Sprinkle the hands with granulated sugar.
13. Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the edges are golden brown.
14. Let the hand pies cool completely on the baking sheet before serving.
* To make the hand pies look even creepier, you can add some almond slivers or chocolate chips to the dough before baking.
* You can also use a different color of food coloring for the hands.
* If you don't have a Halloween cookie cutter, you can use a regular cookie cutter and then cut out the shapes of the fingers with a knife.
