How to Make a Wine Rack With Mailing Tubes

An attractive wine rack or storage system doesn't have to cost more than the vintages it holds. Standard cardboard mailing tubes are the right size for holding a bottle of wine, so they provide a low-cost storage option. Instructions

    • 1

Cut the mailing tubes into 9-inch lengths, using a hacksaw. Cut six lengths of tube.

    • 2

Sand the cut edges lightly with fine-grit sandpaper to smooth out any roughness.

    • 3

Cut the decorative paper into six pieces. Make each piece large enough to wrap around a tube length, with the end overlapping ½ inch.

    • 4

Coat the exterior of the tubes with a thin layer of decoupage glue, using a foam brush for application. Wrap the paper around the tube and smooth it on so there are no air bubbles. Allow the glue to dry for one hour, then apply a second coat of glue to the top of the paper to seal it.

    • 5

Glue three tubes together with a strong epoxy glue to form a row of three tubes. Stack two tubes on top the bottom row of three and glue them in place. Glue the final tube to the top, forming a pyramid.

    • 6

Wrap a belt or ratchet tie-down around the pyramid and tighten it. Allow the glue to dry overnight before removing the belt or tie-down and using the wine rack.
