How to Make a Pool Rack Hanger

Making a pool rack hanger is a useful way to display this lightweight tool when the table is covered or to keep it out of the way once you finish setting up the pool balls. The pool rack is generally triangular accessory that racks up the balls before a game of pool begins. Cover a pool table when not paying a game to protect it from dust and chalk particles floating in the air. Keep track of the pool rack by putting it under the cover or displaying it as wall art on a pool rack hanger.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure one-half inch from the top edge of of each corner on the back side of the plaque. Attach a sawtooth picture hanger to each top corner with small nails.

    • 2

Measure and cut six inches off the dowel rod; make the cut with a hand saw.

    • 3

Paint the cut dowel and plaque with an acrylic paint that coordinates with the room. Use a craft paint brush for the painting. Allow about 30 minutes for the paint to dry. Apply two or more coats if necessary to obtain the color you desire, letting each one dry before adding another coat.

    • 4

Cover the wood cutout with bright acrylic paint so it resembles a pool ball, including the back and edges. Apply as many coats of paint as necessary, allowing each to dry before adding a new one.

    • 5

Trace around a coin -- such as a nickel or quarter -- to add a circle in the center of the wood cutout. Do this with a piece of chalk and on one side only. Paint the circle white and let it dry.

    • 6

Add a tiny sticker with numbers in the center of the white circle to make it look more like a pool ball. Another option is to write the numbers on the cutout with a black permanent marker.

    • 7

Glue the wood cutout to one end of the dowel. Position it so the circle is in the center of the dowel to prevent the rack from sliding off when it is on the hanger. Hold the wood circle in place for a few minutes and let it dry for another half hour.

    • 8

Attach the other end of the cut dowel rod standing up in the center of the plaque with glue. This provides the hanger for the pool rack. Hold it in place for a few minutes until it dries and let it cure for about 30 minutes.

Spray the dowel, cutout and plaque with a glossy sealer and wait for them to dry. It usually takes from 30 minutes to a few hours, depending on the brand.
