Instructions

    • 1

Choose barn door hinges that will fit your door or cupboard. According to the My Deco website, you will achieve the most attractive fit by using strap hinges that cover half to two-thirds of the width of the door or cupboard. For example, if your door is 3 feet wide, use a strap hinge that is 1 1/2 to 2 feet long. Most hinges come in pairs that you install at the top and bottom of the door or cupboard.

    • 2

Place the pintle -- the hinge mechanism that attaches to the frame of the door or cupboard -- where you wish to install it at the top side edge. If you are installing the hinge on a cupboard, place the pintle about 2 to 3 inches below the top corner. If you are installing the hinge on a door, place the pintle 6 to 8 inches below the top corner. Make marks through the screw holes of the hinge mechanism with the pencil for placement of the screws.

    • 3

Drill pilot holes at the pencil marks. Position the pintle over the pilot holes and drive the screws into the wood to mount it on the frame.

    • 4

Hold the strap hinge in place over the cupboard or the door and make marks through the screw holes for placement of the screws.

    • 5

Drill pilot holes at the pencil marks. Position the strap hinge over the pilot holes and drive the screws into the wood of the cupboard or door to mount it on the door.

Repeat the same process to mount the bottom hinge mechanism and hinge the same distance from the bottom of the cupboard or door.
