How to Make a Marble Serving Tray

## Gather Materials:

- Epoxy resin

- Wooden serving tray with a border/lip* (optional)

- Hardener

- Measuring cup

- Marble or granite chips/pieces

- Popsicle sticks

- Drop cloths or plastic sheeting

- Gloves

- Resepirator

*> Note: If you don’t have a serving tray with a border, consider using a small foam or cardboard rim around the tray's edge to contain the resin and chips before it sets.

Directions:

1. Prepare the Tray:

Before starting, lay down drop cloths or plastic sheeting to protect the work area. Put on gloves and a respirator for safety. If the tray has a natural wood finish, it's best to leave it as is. However, if you prefer, you can sand the tray slightly and then wipe it down with a damp cloth to clean any dust.

2. Mix the Epoxy:

According to the epoxy resin product instructions, mix equal parts of resin and hardener in the measuring cup provided. Stir slowly and thoroughly for 3-4 minutes, ensuring the components are well combined. Avoid shaking or stirring too vigorously, as this may introduce bubbles.

3. Pour onto Tray:

Gently pour the mixed resin onto the center of the tray. The resin will naturally flow and spread due to its liquid nature. You may carefully tilt or move the tray slightly to ensure complete coverage.

4. Add Marble Chips:

Immediately after pouring the resin, sprinkle the marble or granite chips over the surface. Distribute the chips evenly, but don’t press them in. The chips will naturally settle into place within the resin.

5. Remove Bubbles:

While adding the chips, you may notice small air bubbles on the resin’s surface. Gently blow on the bubbles or use a popsicle stick to pop them. You can also use a torch to gently heat the surface (keep the flame at least 6 inches away) to encourage bubbles to rise and pop. Be cautious not to overheat the resin or hold the flame too close.

6. Let Resin Set:

Leave the tray in a designated, dust-free area to let the resin cure and harden completely. Refer to the epoxy product's instructions for specific curing times. Some resins require 24-48 hours, while others may need several days to attain full hardness.

7. Remove Border/Rim (Optional):

If you were using removable foam or cardboard borders, carefully remove them after the resin is fully set.

8. Sand and Finish (Optional):

Once the resin has fully cured, you can choose to lightly sand the surface of the tray to smooth out any irregularities or rough edges left from the marble chips. Use fine-grit sandpaper (150-220 grit) and sand gently. You could also seal or varnish the tray with a suitable product for extra protection.

9. Enjoy Your Creation:

Your beautiful marble serving tray is ready to be used! Whether it's for drinks, appetizers, decorative accents, or even unique home décor, this custom tray adds a touch of elegance to any occasion.

Safety Considerations:

- Work in a well-ventilated area due to the fumes from epoxy resin.

- Wear proper protective gear, including gloves and a respirator, to avoid skin contact and inhalation.

- Keep any heat source, such as a torch (if used), away from flammable objects.

- Follow the epoxy product's instructions precisely, especially concerning mixing ratios and curing times.
