Upcycling old sweaters into a cozy quilt is a great way to repurpose material, keep your memories close, and save money. Here are the steps on how to make a quilt from old sweaters:
- Old sweaters
- Rotary cutter or fabric shears
- Cutting mat
- Thread
- Sewing machine
- Needle
- Fabric glue
- Backing fabric
- Batting (quilt filling)
- Wash, dry, and iron your sweaters.
- Cut off any buttons, zippers, or embellishments you don't want on your quilt.
- Lay the sweaters flat and cut them into squares. The size of the squares will determine the size of your final quilt blocks.
- Sew together individual sweater pieces to create quilt blocks. Arrange them in a desired color or pattern scheme.
- Lay out the quilt blocks in the desired arrangement on a flat surface.
- Sew the blocks together using a 1/4-inch seam allowance.
- Place the batting on a flat surface slightly larger than the quilt top.
- Lay the quilt top over the batting and smooth it out.
- Finally, place the backing fabric over the batting, right side facing down.
- Secure the layers with safety pins or basting stitches to avoid shifting.
- Quilt the three layers together using either straight lines, free motion quilting, or preferred pattern.
- Prepare a fabric strip for the quilt binding: 2 ¼” wide, and double the length of your quilt's perimeter plus 10”.
- Sew the binding strip around the edges of the quilt, folding it over to enclose the raw edges and providing a neat, finished look.
- Secure the binding by hand-sewing any open edges.
- Trim any excess fabric and batting from the quilt's corners.
- Give your finished quilt a final press and enjoy!
