How to Make a Sweatshirt Quilt

Materials:

* 6-10 sweatshirts

* Fabric scissors

* Rotary cutter and mat (optional)

* Measuring tape

* Fabric glue

* Sewing machine

* Thread

* Quilt batting

* Fabric backing

* Safety pin

* Fabric marker

Instructions:

1. Gather your materials. You will need 6-10 sweatshirts, fabric scissors or a rotary cutter and mat, a measuring tape, fabric glue, a sewing machine, thread, quilt batting, fabric backing, a safety pin, and a fabric marker.

2. Wash and dry the sweatshirts. This will help to remove any dirt or residue and make them easier to work with.

3. Cut the sweatshirts into squares. The size of the squares will depend on the size of your desired quilt. For a standard-sized quilt, cut the squares to be approximately 12 inches by 12 inches.

4. Arrange the squares in a pleasing design. You can lay the squares out on the floor or on a large table to get an idea of how you want them to look.

5. Use fabric glue to adhere the squares together. Place a small amount of fabric glue on the wrong side of one square, then press it onto the right side of another square. Repeat this process for all of the squares.

6. Let the glue dry according to the package instructions.

7. Sew the squares together using a sewing machine. Start by sewing a 1/4-inch seam around the perimeter of two squares. Then, continue sewing seams around the perimeter of each additional square until they are all sewn together.

8. Trim the excess fabric from the seams. Use fabric scissors or a rotary cutter and mat to trim the excess fabric from the seams so that they are even.

9. Back the quilt with fabric backing. Cut a piece of fabric backing to the same size as the quilt top. Place the quilt top face down on a flat surface, then lay the fabric backing on top of it, right side up.

10. Use safety pins to pin the quilt top and backing together. Pin the layers together around the perimeter, then pin them together in the center.

11. Baste the quilt top and backing together. Sew a few long stitches through the top of the quilt top and the backing to hold them together. This will help to prevent the layers from shifting when you quilt it.

12. Add quilt batting to the quilt. Cut a piece of quilt batting to the same size as the quilt top and backing. Place the quilt batting between the quilt top and backing, with the wrong side of the batting facing the wrong side of the quilt top.

13. Use safety pins to pin the quilt top, batting, and backing together. Pin the layers together around the perimeter, then pin them together in the center.

14. Quilt the sandwich together. You can quilt the quilt by hand or machine. If you are quilting by hand, use a running stitch to sew through all three layers of the quilt. If you are quilting by machine, use a walking foot to evenly feed the layers through the machine.

15. Trim the excess fabric. Once the quilt is quilted, trim the excess fabric from the edges.

16. Bind the quilt. Cut a strip of fabric to be 2.5 inches wide and the length of the quilt's perimeter plus 10 inches. Fold the strip in half lengthwise, press, then unfold. Wrap the strip around the edge of the quilt, matching the raw edges of the strip with the raw edges of the quilt. Sew the binding in place.

7. Enjoy your new sweatshirt quilt!
