If your rafters are too shallow to accommodate the insulation you want to install, you can increase their depth by adding furring strips. Furring strips are thin strips of wood that are nailed to the sides of the rafters. Once the furring strips are in place, you can install the insulation between the rafters and the furring strips.
To increase rafters for insulation, you will need the following materials:
* Furring strips (1x2 or 1x3 inches)
* Nails
* Hammer or nail gun
* Insulation
Instructions:
1. Measure the depth of your rafters.
2. Cut the furring strips to the same length as the rafters.
3. Nail the furring strips to the sides of the rafters, spacing them evenly.
4. Install the insulation between the rafters and the furring strips.
Tips:
* When installing furring strips, be sure to use nails that are long enough to penetrate both the furring strips and the rafters.
* If you are installing fiberglass insulation, be sure to wear gloves and a dust mask to protect yourself from the fiberglass particles.
* If you are installing cellulose insulation, be sure to use a dust collector to remove the dust created by the insulation.
