- 1 cup baking soda
- 1/2 cup cornstarch
- 1 cup cold water
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 1 teaspoon cream of tartar
- Food coloring (optional)
1.) In a medium saucepan, combine the baking soda, cornstarch, and water. Bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring constantly.
2.) Reduce heat to low and simmer for 5 minutes or until the mixture has thickened and become slightly translucent.
3.) Remove the saucepan from the heat and stir in the vegetable oil and cream of tartar.
4.) If desired, add food coloring and mix until the color is uniform.
5.) Turn the clay out onto a lightly floured surface and knead until smooth.
6.) Wrap the clay in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes before using.
- For best results, use fresh, room-temperature ingredients.
- If the clay is too sticky, add a little more cornstarch.
- If the clay is too dry, add a little more water.
- This clay is not edible and should not be ingested.
- Store the clay in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
- Bake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 10-12 minutes, or until the clay is firm and slightly browned.
- Allow the clay to cool completely before handling.
