Kawaii Bedroom Ideas

In Japanese culture, the term "kawaii" is used to identify fashion, art, food and other pop culture items that are cute or child-like. In terms of decor, kawaii represents a fun, whimsical style that is ideal for a young girl's bedroom or anyone in touch with her inner child. When giving a bedroom a kawaii-inspired makeover, creativity is essential. You can capture kawaii's trademark sense of whimsy by taking a cue from Japanese pop culture.
  1. Bright Colors

    • When decorating a kawaii bedroom, rely on bold colors to brighten the space. Pink is an ideal wall color to give the room a whimsical look. You can opt for a hot pink or magenta shade in a large room but a lighter, bubblegum shade is a better choice for a smaller space. For accent colors, choose other bright shades such as purple or lime green. Yellow and turquoise can also work but it’s also a good idea to break up all the bold color with some neutral items. White is an ideal color option for furniture and accessories in a room with an otherwise bright color palette.

    Patterned Walls

    • While color alone can help give your bedroom a trademark kawaii look, adding pattern to the walls can bring the quirky style to life. Consider painting stripes on your wall in two or three bright shades or you can create an easy polka-dot pattern by tracing a glass, bowl or plate to create circles all over the wall. Vary the size and color of the dots to give the wall added dimension. If you prefer a more whimsical design, use stencils to add hearts, flowers or even animal shapes to your walls.

    Japanese Cartoon Characters

    • Because kawaii décor originates in Japan, it usually features well-known Japanese cartoon characters. The best-known character is probably Hello Kitty, the white cat who always wears a trademark bow at her ear. You can choose from a wide range of decorating items that feature Hello Kitty to add an authentic element to your kawaii bedroom. Use a Hello Kitty sheet set or pillows for the bed and add a Hello Kitty throw rug in the center of the room. You can also add Hello Kitty accessories such as a clock, bank, calendar or stuffed toys to the shelves. If you aren’t a fan of Hello Kitty, decorate with items that feature her friends, including My Melody, Badtz-Maru, Chococat or the Little Twin Stars. Other Japanese cartoon characters that catch your eye will work as well.

    Embellished Accessories

    • To put the finishing touches on your kawaii bedroom, include several embellished accessories. You can hang a mirror that features bow details on its frame or a bulletin board with a sequined frame on the wall. Replace a plain lampshade with one covered in miniature silk flowers or faux pearl beads. Picture frames that feature rhinestones or lacy trim are ideal for displaying photos of family and friends. If you’re on a budget, you can embellish many plain items yourself with beads, ribbons, sequins, rhinestones and other trimmings from the craft store for an authentic kawaii look.
