How to Add Pockets to a Skirt or Dress

Pockets are a great way to add functionality and style to any skirt or dress. They can be added to both new and existing garments, and the process is relatively simple. Here's how to do it:

Materials

* Skirt or dress

* Fabric (matching the garment or contrasting)

* Thread

* Scissors

* Sewing machine or needle and thread

* Pins

* Measuring tape

* Fabric chalk or marker

* Pocket lining (optional)

Instructions

1. Prepare the skirt or dress. Turn the garment inside out and lay it flat on a table. If the garment has a waistband, fold it down so that the top of the skirt or dress is even.

2. Measure and cut the fabric. Cut two pieces of fabric, each measuring the desired width and height of the pockets. The width of the fabric should be about 1 inch (2.5 cm) wider than the desired width of the pocket, and the height of the fabric should be about 2 inches (5 cm) taller than the desired height of the pocket.

3. Mark the pocket placement. Use fabric chalk or a marker to mark the location of the pockets on the wrong side of the skirt or dress. The pockets should be placed at the desired height, and they should be evenly spaced.

4. Pin the fabric to the skirt or dress. Pin the fabric pieces to the wrong side of the skirt or dress, matching the raw edges of the fabric with the marked lines. Make sure that the fabric is smooth and flat, and that there are no wrinkles or gathers.

5. Sew the pockets in place. Stitch around the edges of the fabric pieces, using a 1/4-inch (6 mm) seam allowance. Leave the top edge of the pockets open.

6. Trim the seams. Trim the seams around the pockets to 1/4-inch (6 mm). This will help to reduce bulk and make the pockets easier to turn.

7. Turn the pockets right side out. Carefully turn the pockets right side out, using a point turner or other blunt object. Be sure to push out the corners.

8. Press the pockets. Press the pockets flat, making sure that the seams are pressed open.

9. Sew the top of the pockets closed. Fold the top edge of the pockets down 1/4 inch (6 mm) and press. Stitch the top of the pockets closed, using a 1/4-inch (6 mm) seam allowance.

10. Add pocket lining (optional). If desired, you can add a pocket lining to the pockets. To do so, cut two pieces of fabric, each measuring 1 inch (2.5 cm) smaller than the pockets. Stitch the pocket linings to the inside of the pockets, using a 1/4-inch (6 mm) seam allowance.

Tips

* When choosing fabric for the pockets, consider the weight and drape of the garment. A lightweight fabric will work well for a lightweight skirt or dress, while a heavier fabric will be better suited for a heavier garment.

* You can use any type of stitch to sew the pockets in place, but a straight stitch or a zigzag stitch are both good options.

* If you don't have a sewing machine, you can also sew the pockets in place by hand.

* Be sure to test the pockets before you sew them in place to make sure that they're the right size and in the right location.

Variations

* You can add pockets to any type of skirt or dress, including skirts, dresses, pants, and shorts.

* You can experiment with different pocket shapes, sizes, and placements to create a unique look.

* You can also add embellishments to the pockets, such as buttons, appliques, or trim.

Adding pockets to a skirt or dress is a great way to add functionality and style to your wardrobe. With a little bit of time and effort, you can easily create pockets that are both practical and stylish.
