How to Disconnect the Lines From a Kenmore Dryer

The Kenmore brand of appliances, available at Sears, includes 48 different dryer models, about half of which are gas and half electric. If you have one of these dryers and you need to move or service it, you'll have to disconnect it before you can pull it far from the wall. This involves removing the vent, which is connected on the back of the machine, as well as the gas lines, if it's a gas model. Electric and gas models both have plugs, and even though the one on an electric dryer is large, it isn't dangerous.

  Unplug the dryer by pulling the plug from the receptacle on the wall behind or beside the dryer. Electric dryers have large 240-volt plugs, but they come straight out when you pull them, just like the more familiar 120-volt ones.

  Pull the dryer a few inches from the wall and look behind it to get an idea of the lengths of the vent pipe and gas hose, if you have a gas dryer. Pull the dryer out far enough to get behind it, stopping short of putting tension on either of these connections.

  Disconnect the vent by loosening the clamp holding it to the exhaust outlet near the bottom of the dryer. If it's a wire clamp, squeeze the two handles and slide it along the vent pipe and pull the vent away from the dryer. If it's a metal strap, loosen the screw with a screwdriver and slide it along the pipe to disconnect the vent.

  Turn off the gas valve, which is probably located near the wall, if yours is a gas model. The valve is off when the direction of the handle is perpendicular to the pipe.

  Unscrew the gas connection to the dryer with a wrench and pull the hose away from the dryer. Unscrew the other end of the hose from the valve when you pull the dryer farther away, which you are now ready to do.
