How to Vent a Propane Clothes Dryer

A propane gas dryer must vent to the outdoors to expel the exhaust from the burning propane. The exhaust gas may contain carbon monoxide, which is unsafe to breath. Building inspectors in many communities require a rigid duct installed without screws. Some will allow a flexible metal duct, but most will not allow a flexible plastic duct because it is a fire hazard. A rigid metal duct provides the safest, longest-lasting and most efficient method of properly ducting a dryer.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the gas valve and pull the dryer away from the wall. Do not stretch or pull tight the flexible gas piping that connects the dryer to the valve. Place the supplied band clamp over the end of the periscope vent, then fit the periscope vent over the round vent on the back of the dryer. Tighten the band clamp with a screwdriver until it is snug. Push the dryer back against the wall.

    • 2

Choose a location for the vent to pass through the outside wall. Hold a stud finder on the wall near the desired vent location, depress the find button and slide the stud finder left and right. Mark the location of the studs on the wall.

    • 3

Place a hole saw on the wall positioned between the studs. Do not allow the saw to cut through the studs. Start the drill and saw through the drywall. Part the insulation with your hand and place the saw against the plywood sheathing that covers the exterior of the house. Cut through the sheathing and the siding.

    • 4

Insert a dryer vent kit into the hole from the outside. Fasten the vent to the house with the supplied screws. Seal the vent to the siding with a bead of caulk around the vent.

    • 5

Route 3-inch duct pipe to the vent kit beginning at the periscope and make turns using 3-inch duct elbows. Cut duct to length as required with sheet metal shears, and measure from the crimped end of the pipe. Each piece of duct must have a crimped end. The shortest route with the fewest turns is the best route and will help clothes dry faster and prevent lint clogging.

    • 6

Place duct strapping around the duct pipe every 3 to 5 feet. Fasten the strapping to studs or rafters with screws to support the duct in place. Short vertical runs of ducting don't need a lot of support -- one or two straps to keep the duct pipes as straight as possible is enough.

    • 7

Wrap the joints between the duct pipes and elbows with several turns of metal duct tape. Press the tape against the duct pipes to create a tight seal. Turn on the gas valve that supplies the dryer.
