Does a Steam Dryer Require a Water Hook Up?

Steam clothes dryers offer special cycles that use steam to reduce odors and help remove wrinkles from laundry. Installing a steam dryer, however, is somewhat different from installing a traditional dryer that does not have a steam cycle because a water hookup is necessary for the steam cycles.
  1. Water Hookup

    • A steam dryer requires water in order to produce steam, and the dryer must be installed within 4 or 5 feet of cold water fill valves. The dryers include the necessary hoses and Y connector needed to connect them to a water supply.

    Water Pressure

    • In order for the steam cycles to work properly, the water pressure entering the dryer must be from 20 to 120 pounds per square inch (psi). Because that range is the standard water pressure required by most water-based appliances, the home probably already has that water pressure level, but you can connect a water pressure gauge to a faucet to check water pressure. Call a plumber if you need assistance.

    Hard Water

    • Installing a household water softener is recommended if the home has hard water. Using a water softener helps to prevent mineral scale from building up in the water system; a buildup can clog the steam system and reduce its performance. If left untreated, mineral scale can cause the need for some of the steam system components to be repaired or replaced.

    Tips

    • Once the steam clothes dryer installation is complete, an examination should verify that the water faucets are turned on and the water hoses are straight. Leaks around the hose connections call for tightening the connections. Never try to open the dryer door when a steam cycle is in process because the steam is quite hot and could cause injury. The steam cycle should not be used on brand new clothes until the clothes are washed; otherwise, they may be damaged.
