Tools & Materials
- Adjustable wrench
- Phillips screwdriver
- Pipe wrench
- Replacement cartridge and O-rings
- Plumber's grease
- Rag
Before beginning any repairs, turn the water off. The shutoff valves usually are located underneath or behind the sink or behind a nearby access panel in the wall.
1. Prepare the Faucet
Place a rag under the faucet to catch drips and prevent debris from falling into the drain. Using the adjustable wrench, remove the aerator by turning it counterclockwise. Next, use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the handle.
2. Remove the Cartridge
Next, remove the packing nut using the adjustable wrench. Underneath, you'll see the cartridge stem. You may have to use the wrench again to remove the cartridge.
3. Install Replacement Parts
Replace both O-rings and lubricate the replacement cartridge with plumber's grease before installing it. Next, put the packing nut back on and ensure it's snug (not too tight). Finally, replace the handle and the aerator.
4. Test the Faucet
Turn the water back on and test the faucet to ensure there are no leaks. If there are leaks, tighten the packing nut or the cartridge (be sure not to over-tighten).
