General Electric refrigerators have a rubber gasket that surrounds the doors leading to both the freezer and fresh food compartment. When the door is closed, the gasket becomes compressed between the door jamb and the door, preventing cold air from escaping and warm air from entering the freezer compartment. After many years, the gasket will break down, as it is made of a heavy rubber compound. When the gasket breaks down, the air-tight seal is compromised, leading to an increase in the temperature of the compartment. When signs of wear are found on the gasket, you must remove it and install a new one, which requires no tools.
