How to Troubleshoot a GE Gas Stove Ignition

The GE gas stove's ignition provides fuel to the surface burners to activate the burners for stovetop cooking, and it emits a distinct clicking noise during the ignition startup process. Issues with your stove's electrodes or gas supply are the common causes of an inoperable burner if the burners do not produce a flame, as the electrodes must produce a spark prior to the burner's flame emission. Gas supply issues require immediate professional repair, as the risk of fire and compromised health is high if left untreated.

Check the gas range's power cord to ensure it is properly inserted into a nearby outlet. The power cord requires a grounded connection, and it does not function properly when plugged into an extension cord.

Push the burner's knob in and turn it to "LITE" to start the spark module. The electrode underneath the burner clicks while air is pushed through the line, and it produces a flame shortly after the burner is turned on.

Turn the burner's knob to the off position and wait for the grate to cool before touching it. Pull off the grate, burner cap and burner head. Wipe the top of the electrode located underneath the burner head. Replace the burner head, burner cap and grate, and turn the knob to "LITE" to test the ignition.

Inspect the burner's flame while the burner is in use. A blue flame or yellow tips are normal for your gas stove, but a solid yellow flame indicates the gas supply requires professional inspection and maintenance.
