How to Remove a Spacemaker Microwave

A GE Spacemaker microwave oven mounts under a kitchen cabinet, typically over a cooktop or stove, to maximize countertop space. The microwave oven is connected to the underside of the cabinet with mounting screws and hangs with the support of a hinged metal bracket bolted into the wall behind the appliance. Removing the oven requires the help of a friend to prevent dropping the appliance, as well as a screwdriver to remove the hardware holding the microwave in place.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the cabinets over the Spacemaker appliance to locate the electrical outlet inside. Unplug the microwave's power cord from the socket.

    • 2

Peel off the duct tape holding the ductwork to the vent on the top of the microwave, which extends through the bottom of the cabinet.

    • 3

Extract the screws inside the bottom of the cabinet where the hardware connects to the top of the microwave. Get a friend to hold the microwave from the bottom while you remove the screws on the top inside the cabinet.

    • 4

Tilt the microwave forward to pull the appliance at an angle from under the microwave, then lift the appliance out of the groove in the metal bracket bolted to the wall behind the appliance.

    • 5

Pull the power cord down and out of the hole in the underside of the cabinet where it had been connected to the power outlet. The microwave can now be moved safely from the kitchen for repairs or replacement.
