How to Locate a GE Gas Range Igniter

Your GE gas range has several igniters that are used to light the gas emitted by each burner on the appliance. The igniters on the stove top are easy to spot, but the oven igniters are hidden. If you suspect that one of the igniters in your oven has failed, you need to remove it for testing. The igniter is somewhat hidden, and it's attached to the burner itself. To access the igniter, you must remove a few panels, all of which are secured with screws.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the breaker for the range in your service panel, or unplug the range from the wall outlet.

    • 2

Open the oven door, then unlock the door hinges. The hinges each have a lock that you must move down, toward the oven door. Once the door is unlocked, close the door to the broil-stop position, then lift the door off the range.

    • 3

Remove the screws securing the oven's bottom panel, if attempting to locate the bake igniter.

    • 4

Remove the screws securing the burner shield, then remove the burner shield, if applicable to your GE model. Both the bake and broil burners have a burner shield that helps to distribute the heat evenly throughout the oven, although not all models of GE ranges have burner shields. If your model does not, skip this step.

Look on the side of the burner, toward the rear of the range. The igniter is secured to the rear of the side of the burner, and it is rectangular in shape.
