How to Heat Treat Bimetal

Bimetal is a polar metal that responds to heat by way of bending. The primary use for bimetal is on a home thermostat, because it can determine the ambient temperature of a home or room. If you would like to test the bimetal response for heat, you can do it with a common household item. You don’t have to be an air conditioning technician to heat test your bimetal. You can do it yourself with little hassle.

Instructions

    • 1

Switch your thermostat to the “On” position, if it isn’t already set.

    • 2

Pull the faceplate off of your thermostat with your fingers. The faceplate should just pop off. This will expose the internal wiring of the thermostat.

    • 3

Locate the small strip of bimetal inside your thermostat. Some bimetals are coiled.

    • 4

Plug in a hairdryer, and turn it to the hottest settings. Aim the hairdryer at your bimetal. Within a few seconds, the air conditioner should turn on as the bimetal responds to the heat inside the thermostat.

    • 5

Replace your thermostat, if the air conditioner does not respond to the bimetal heating.
