Remove the panel from your home air return. You might need a screwdriver to unlock the panel. Once opened, you should have access to the air filter.
Pull the air filter out of the return and inspect it for dust. If the filter has a minimal amount of dust, the filter is all right and probably does not need to be replaced.
Replace the filter if it is heavily coated with dust. If you can’t replace the filter immediately, use a vacuum cleaner to remove as of the dust as possible. Replace the filter when you have a chance.
Determine if the weather is the cause for your defrost to not work. Rain and high humidity will cause the heat pump to freeze up. Turn off the heater at your thermostat to allow the dry out overnight before you turn it back on.
Fill a bucket with hot water from your sink and go to the defrost panel on the back of your heat pump. Pour the hot water on the ice to melt it. Although the heat pump may freeze up again, this will give you a chance to heat your house temporarily.
Call a certified HVAC technician to take a look at your heat pump if these solutions are not working for you. They will be able to properly diagnose your unit and make an appropriate repair.
