How to Replace the Tub Bearing on a Maytag Atlantis Washer

Maytag Atlantis washing machines are residential, top-loading appliances with oversize tubs and multiple washing cycles and temperature settings. The tub bearing in Maytag Atlantis washers helps to ensure that the tub agitates and spins smoothly. If agitator doesn't function or the tub fails to spin properly, you may have a bad tub bearing. Replacing the tub bearing restores normal operation and enables the tub to spin as expected. Unless you have previous experience with this type of repair, you may wish to consult a professional.

Instructions

    • 1

Disconnect the cord from the grounded wall outlet to avoid electrical injury while repairing your Atlantis washer. Turn off the hot and cold water supply; the valves are usually found on the wall behind the machine. Pull the water supply lines and drain hose off of the ports on the back panel; the supply lines are secured with screw clamps, and the drain hose is held in place with a pinch clamp.

    • 2

Pop off the agitator cap to reveal the bolt and washer securing the agitator assembly to the washer tub; slide a small flat-head screwdriver under the edge of the cap and lift it. Remove the bolt, using a 7/16-inch socket wrench, then lift off the washer. Lift the agitator assembly up and out of the tub.

    • 3

Tip the washer onto its back to access the motor assembly underneath the appliance. Cushion the floor with an old towel or rug to avoid scratching the back panel's finish.

    • 4

Disconnect the washer pump from the motor by lifting the metal retaining tabs with a flat-head screwdriver. Pull straight up on the pump to separate it from the top of the motor assembly. Guide the pump toward the left side of the washer cabinet so that it's not in your way; it isn't necessary to detach the two connected hoses.

    • 5

Detach the wiring connected to the motor; pinch and pull the plastic connectors to unplug them from the wiring harness. Remove the wires from the plastic clip on the side of the motor casing.

    • 6

Remove the 1/2-inch bolts on the gear case with a socket wrench. Pull the motor assembly out through the bottom of the washer cabinet. Place the removed motor assembly on an old towel or rug while you replace the tub bearing.

    • 7

Examine the orientation of the disc-like component at the base of the motor shaft; this is the tub bearing. Remove the old tub bearing. Fit the new tub bearing onto the motor shaft and slide it into place.

    • 8

Reverse the disassembly steps to reassemble the Atlantis washer. Plug the washer into the wall outlet and restore the water supply.
