What Size Wire Do I Need for a 16 Seer Goodman Air Conditioner?

Owning an older home often means owning an old air conditioning unit. Up to 50 percent of your electric bill can go toward heating and cooling when you have an older, inefficient unit. Properly installing a new unit, like the Goodman SSX16 model air conditioner, which offers up to 16 SEER performance, will reduce your energy costs considerably. Goodman is one of the largest air conditioning manufacturers in the United States and produces its units domestically, in plants in Texas and Tennessee.
  1. SEER

    • The Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio is a rating based on the total cooling output of an air conditioning unit divided by the total amount of electric energy input the unit requires to run during that same time. The higher the SEER number, the more energy efficient the unit is. A SEER rating of 13 is considered a minimum; options go all the way up to 24. A 16 SEER unit is more efficient than the 13 SEER and only marginally more expensive. And, a 16 SEER unit costs about 20 percent less to run per year than a 13 SEER.

    Wire Size

    • Your 16 SEER Goodman air conditioner needs to be connected to your home’s power supply. When connecting the low voltage portions, like the thermostat, use wire gauge #12 wires rated for 20 amps and 120 volts. For the high voltage wires connecting the unit to your home’s power supply, use #8 gauge wires that are rated for 40 amps and 240 volts.

    Other Electrical Needs

    • When making the connections between a 16 SEER Goodman air conditioner and your home’s power, the wire must not only be properly sized, but also be rated Class II by the National Electric Code. The NEC is the standard for safe electrical installations set by the National Fire Protection Association. Most states and municipalities require electrical work in residences and businesses follow the NEC. The air conditioner needs to be grounded to reduce the risk of electric shock when it is in use. Use copper conductors only when grounding your unit.

    Considerations

    • Wiring requirements for Goodman air conditioning units can change over time, even if the model number remains the same. Always check the wiring requirements that come with an individual unit before beginning installation. Air conditioning units should be installed by a licensed technician. Not only might this be required by your local municipality's electrical code, but because high voltage wiring is involved, the risk of injury or death is increased.
