Measure the air conditioner unit -- width, depth and height. Use a tape measure and write down all measurements. Place a level on top of the unit to ensure it's properly in place. If the air conditioner is crooked, reposition, check with the level again and remeasure for accuracy.
Install cafe curtain rods 4 inches to 6 inches above the top of the air conditioner. Hang curtains from the rod, making sure the length of the curtains extends down to at least 4 inches to 6 inches below the bottom of the unit. Open the curtains when the unit is in use and close them when the unit is turned off to conceal the air conditioner behind the curtains.
Opt for mini blinds made of plastic, wood grain or fabric. Buy blinds that are wide enough to extend across the entire top of the air conditioner, plus an additional 4 inches on both sides to further conceal the unit. When installing the blinds, use an extender so that the blinds extend out from the wall and are able to go down fully over the front of the unit. Most window-mounted air conditioners only stick out a few inches from the wall, which makes extending the blinds possible. Use blinds in coordinating colors or designs to match the rest of your room.
Consider building a cabinet with doors to house the air conditioner. Try a wood style with swing doors that can be latched shut when not in use. Opt for wood grains that match the other furniture in the room or area to create a seamless look and feel.
Decorate the unit with magnets if the unit is made of metal. Consider using an assortment of magnets to cover up every inch of metal. Use matching magnets if you want to create a work of art where coordinating magnets overlap and blend together to create a visual display of color and objects. Or cover the entire air conditioner in stickers.
Decorate the exterior of your house. Use tall plants or a trellis with climbing flowers and plants to mask the look of your air conditioner from the outside. Consider potted plants, fruit trees or even tall garden statues; depending on how high off the ground your unit is.
