How to Use Corn Meal in Soil

Corn gluten meal and horticultural cornmeal have several applications in gardening. Cornmeal fights fungi and provides nutrients to garden plants, while CGM acts as an herbicide to prevent weed seeds from sprouting. Both products are non-toxic and effective during rainy or dry weather. You can purchase CGM and horticultural cornmeal from feed stores and garden supply centers.

Instructions

    • 1

Distribute horticultural cornmeal at a rate of 20 to 40 lbs. per square feet during the soil preparation process. The added cornmeal will provide nutrients to new plants and prevent plant diseases.

    • 2

Spread 10 to 20 lbs. of cornmeal per 1,000 square feet to control fungal diseases. Since cornmeal needs water to activate, use a garden sprayer to moisten your soil after application, or apply before heavy rainfall.

    • 3

Spread corn gluten meal in late April or early May and again in mid-August. Use 20 lbs. of CGM for every 1,000 square feet. CGM will control germination of weed seeds, but is ineffective against existing plants.
