How to Build a Worm Composter

Materials:

1. Plastic storage bin with a lid (the larger the bin, the more worms you can compost)

2. Power drill

3. 1/2-inch drill bit

4. Newspaper

5. Cardboard

6. Dirt

7. Worms (red wigglers are ideal for composting)

8. Food scraps (vegetable peels, fruit rinds, coffee grounds, tea bags, etc.)

Instructions:

1. Drill 1/2-inch holes in the lid of the plastic storage bin. This will allow air to circulate and prevent the compost from becoming too moist.

2. Shred some newspaper and cardboard into small pieces. This will help to aerate the compost and provide drainage.

3. Add a layer of shredded newspaper and cardboard to the bottom of the bin.

4. Add a layer of dirt. This will help to provide the worms with nutrients and grit.

5. Add the worms to the bin.

6. Begin adding food scraps to the bin. Bury the food scraps under a thin layer of dirt.

7. Keep the compost moist but not wet. You should be able to squeeze out a few drops of water from a handful of compost.

8. Stir the compost every few days to aerate it and help it to decompose.

9. Every few months, you will need to harvest the finished compost. To do this, simply empty the bin and sift through the compost. The finished compost will be dark, crumbly, and smell like fresh soil.

Tips:

- Don't add meat, dairy products, or fats to the compost bin. These items can attract pests and cause the compost to smell bad.

- Place the compost bin in a shady spot outdoors. The worms will thrive in a cool, dark environment.

- If you live in a cold climate, you may need to insulate the compost bin to keep the worms warm during the winter.

- Worm composting is a great way to recycle food scraps and reduce your waste. It's also a fun and educational project that the whole family can enjoy.
