How to Load a Weed Eater

Weed Eater is a brand of lawn and garden trimmer that uses plastic string similar to fishing line for grooming the edges of a yard. The plastic string is quite durable, though it will wear down over time, requiring the user to periodically extend string from the spool inside the Weed Eater housing. Eventually, the spool will run out of string, requiring a short procedure to refill the spool.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the Weed Eater and turn it upside down, so that the handle is touching the ground. Press the tab under the ring on the bottom of the Weed Eater. At the same time, grasp onto the retaining ring (which forms a circle around the large button in the middle of the spool housing) and turn the retaining ring in the direction of the arrows on the ring. Pull up to remove the retaining ring. Remove the large button from the top of the spool.

Remove the trimmer line spool from the spool housing by grasping the spool and pulling evenly out of the housing. On some models, you might have to press down on the spool and turn the spool to your left 1 inch, then pull the spool out of the housing.

Cut off a 20-foot piece of refill trimmer line. Place 1 inch of the end of the trimmer line through the hole in the spool. Wind the trimmer line onto the spool in the direction of the arrows. Place the end of the trimmer line in one of the two notches on the edge of the spool.

Place the spool back into the spool housing on the Weed Eater, and slide the end of the trimmer line through the trimmer line eyelet on the spool housing. Note that on some models, you will need to press down on the spool, turn the spool to your right 1 inch, then release the spool to place the spool in the housing.

Place the large button back on top of the spool. Place the retainer ring on top of the spool housing. Line up the notches of the ring with the notches of the spool housing and press down. Turn the retainer ring in the direction indicated by the arrows on the ring or housing to snap the ring in place.
