Hold the trimmer upside down so you can see the black knurled button on the bottom of the trimmer head that attaches to the end of the long metal trimmer shaft.
Turn the button clockwise to remove it from the trimmer head. With the button removed, pull off the trimmer head cover.
Pull the black spool off the trimmer shaft and remove the small amount of string left on the spool. Discard the leftover string.
Cut two pieces of string into 10-foot lengths with a utility knife.
Locate the two holes on the top of the trimmer head. Slide one string through each hole until approximately 2 inches of string protrude through the top of the trimmer head.
Wrap the string tightly around the spool until approximately 12 inches of string remain unwound. Hook the strings into the notches on the side of the spool. This holds the string and prevents it from unwinding while you install the spool.
Slide the spool onto the trimmer shaft and then slide the trimmer head cover over the spool. When you do so, make sure you feed the string through the small holes on the side of the trimmer head.
Tighten the black knurled button onto the trimmer head by turning it counterclockwise.
Pull hard on each string coming out of the trimmer head to unlock it from the notches.
