1. Put on the garment and mark where you want the buttonholes to be.
2. For shirts and blouses, place the buttonholes 2-3 inches from the center front of the garment.
3. For skirts and pants, place the buttonholes 1 inch from the waist.
Step 2: Choose a Button
1. Select a button that is slightly smaller than the buttonhole you will create.
Step 3: Prepare the Fabric
1. Place a piece of stabilizer behind the fabric. This will help the fabric from stretching when the buttonhole is sewn.
Step 4: Sew the Buttonhole
1. Using a sewing machine, sew the buttonhole according to the instructions in your machine manual.
2. Be sure to backstitch at the beginning and end of the buttonhole to secure it.
Step 5: Cut Open the Buttonhole
1. Use a seam ripper to carefully cut open the buttonhole.
2. Be sure to cut only the fabric, and not the stitches.
Step 6: Finish the Buttonhole
1. Use a Fray Check to seal the edges of the buttonhole to prevent fraying.
2. Use a buttonhole punch to make the corners of the buttonhole more rounded if desired.
Step 7: Sew on the Button
1. Place the button on the fabric, positioning it so that the shank is in the center of the buttonhole.
2. Sew through the holes in the button using a matching thread.
